How Alphia and Young Leaders are sparking change through civic dialogues in Liberia

In late January 2025, a quiet but powerful movement began across communities in Liberia. It wasn’t led by politicians or big organizations—it was led by young people, determined to take ownership of their country’s future.

At the heart of it all was Alphia, a Youth Development Practitioner and Program Manager of the Young Political Leadership School Africa. With a team of equally dedicated alumni, they launched a series of Community Civic Dialogues—open conversations designed to bring citizens together, strengthen democracy, and inspire collective action.

The journey began on January 25 in Brewerville District #17. Under a sky filled with possibility, young community members gathered to talk about life after the elections. They didn’t just talk about the challenges—they focused on solutions, committing themselves to initiatives like skills development and community action. For many, this was their first time openly discussing how they could play a role in shaping Liberia’s future.

Just two days later, on January 27, the dialogues moved to Pipeline District #3. Here, the energy was just as electric. Young people voiced a shared hunger for real change—not just promises from leaders, but action led by themselves. They recognized that active citizenship begins with learning, building skills, and creating opportunities where none existed before.

The final stop was Logan Town #15 on January 28. The momentum only grew stronger. Participants spoke with passion about their dreams for stronger communities and a more accountable democracy. They left the session not just motivated, but organized—ready to take small, consistent steps that would ripple outward into lasting impact.

Through it all, Alphia and the YPLS Africa Cohort 11 alumni stood as guides and partners, not just organizers. Their leadership showed that when young people come together, listen to one another, and commit to action, real transformation begins.

This series of dialogues was more than a program—it was a spark. A reminder that change doesn’t always start from the top. Sometimes, it starts with a circle of determined young leaders sitting together under the open sky, believing in a better tomorrow and ready to build it themselves.
