It was a moment that Alphia would never forget—the evening she was awarded the 2024 Young Woman of Excellence by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Delta Iota Zeta Chapter. The room was filled with applause and admiration as Alphia stepped up to receive the honor, alongside Benita Whitney Urey, who was recognized as the 2025 Young Woman of Excellence.

The event, The Fireside, had already set the stage for something special. It wasn’t just an awards ceremony; it was a celebration of women in leadership. Held at the Royal Grand Hotel on March 30th, Alphia’s award was presented as part of an unforgettable evening of networking, experience sharing, and inspiration. Women from all walks of life gathered to reflect on their journeys and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Alphia stood there, humbled and grateful, as she reflected on her path to this moment. It wasn’t just the recognition that meant so much; it was the opportunity to continue empowering young people across Africa. Over the years, Alphia has been dedicated to creating an environment where youth can thrive, develop, and lead with purpose. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me,” Alphia said in her speech. “And to those who’ve mentioned my name positively in rooms where I wasn’t present—you are the reason I stand here today. This award is not just mine; it’s a reflection of all the young people I work with, and together, we will continue to push for positive change.”
The night was not only about celebrating Alphia’s achievements but also about looking forward. Young women from high schools and universities had been invited to attend The Fireside, giving them the opportunity to interact with women leaders and see firsthand what’s possible when you dare to dream big. For many of them, the event was a life-changing experience, fueling their aspirations to take on leadership roles in their own communities.

As an annual gathering for women, by women, it partnered with women-owned businesses, service providers, and organizations to amplify the voices of women leaders. This year’s event, hosted by Cllr. Moriah Yeakula-Korkpor, raised funds through a raffle for critical service projects, including breast cancer awareness, support for the Antoinette Tubman Cheshire Home, and efforts to prevent sex and gender-based violence in Paynesville schools.
As Alphia took a moment to look around the room, she knew this was only the beginning. The journey ahead was filled with even more opportunities to serve, inspire, and make a difference. And with the support of her peers, mentors, and the next generation of young leaders, Alphia was ready to continue her work in youth development with renewed energy and purpose.
